The centerpiece of Ravinia’s celebration of R. Strauss’s 150th anniversary is his immortal opera Salome, with Patricia Racette giving her first performance in the title role. Based on a play by Oscar Wilde, the opera was deemed “black art” and “too immoral” for a third performance during its Chicago premiere in 1910 on account of the lascivious and now-famed “Dance of the Seven Veils.” James Conlon leads this concert presentation that also features the Ravinia debuts of Gabriele Schnaut, Wolfgang Schmidt and Egils Silins.
